Ladies, Menopause is a natural biological process that all woman experience at some point in their lives, during which hair can change texture and begin to thin out. For most woman, the most common cause of hair loss during menopause is hormonal changes, however there are other factors that can contribute to your hair loss during this time. Extreme high levels of stress and a lack of nutrients can also be factors in the hair loss. Let’s face it, your hair is your crown and it is the accessory that you never take off (unless you are rocking a fabulous wig). Hair loss can make you feel self-conscience about your appearance. We gathered the top tips from professional hair stylists in Las Vegas (Town Square and Tivoli Village)…so here are some steps that you can take to keep your gorgeous hair healthy and strong during menopause.

#1 -Move It, Move It!

This one is across the board. Exercise is a key component to a healthy lifestyle period. I know its not what we want to hear but unfortunately there is no denying it. An active lifestyle can help prevent some other symptoms of menopause including mood swings, weight gain, and insomnia. All these factors are important for maintaining hormonal balance which ultimately aids in healthy hair growth. So, get out your yoga mats, put on your cutest trainers and get movin’! And if you live in the Las Vegas area, take advantage of the beautiful hiking areas that surround the Las Vegas and Summerlin area.

#2 -Quit Your Stressin’

Hormonal imbalance can be caused by stress, so it is very important to keep those stress levels to a minimum. Reduced estrogen production can affect your brain chemistry and cause mood swings, anxiety, and depression. Maybe incorporating yoga or breathing exercises can help you to keep those stress levels down and help to maintain a healthy head of hair at the same time. If you are interested in professional hair products that can assist through the change, you can consult with a beauty professional at LOOK Style Society, located near the Las Vegas Strip (Town Square) and our Summerlin location (Tivoli Village).

#3 -Keep The Junk Food to a Minimum

Let’s face it,  sometimes we all need that chocolate bar, nice cold soda, or  salty French fries, but maintaining a healthy diet during menopause can really be one of your best defenses against hair loss. Make sure you are including an adequate amount whole grains, fruits, and vegetables in every meal if possible. Drinking green tea and taking vitamin B6 and folic acid supplements may help restore hair growth as well. Foods that contain essential fatty acids like salmon, tuna, flaxseed oil, walnuts, and almonds can also play a crucial role in maintaining hair health. So just remember the next time that piece of chocolate cake is staring you in the face, try to remember how fabulous your hair can look if you can just resist (most of the time).

#4 -Water, Water, Water!

For your body to function properly your body needs to be watered. Staying hydrated is so important to your overall health including the strength of your luscious locks. Try your best to pass on juices, sodas, and other flavored drinks that have way more sugar than your body needs. The amount of water you need varies from person to person but as a rule of thumb you should aim to have eight 8-ounce glasses of delicious water a day.

#5 -Take Care of Your Hair

When it comes to over drying and breakage, there are several steps to help prevent those things. I don’t think that when our hair was created however long ago it was meant to have 200-450 degrees of heat applied to it every day. Before you curl, blow dry or flat iron your hair you MUST apply a thermal heat protectant before doing so. Giving your hair a break from the heat is also a great idea. Try a cute bun or braid every couple of days just to avoid sizzling the life out of your hair. When it comes to hair color, no color is obviously the best route but let’s face it, that doesn’t suit most of us. Lightening of the natural hair as opposed to depositing color onto the hair can often lead to more damage. Using a quality hair color is also very important when taking the integrity of your hair into consideration.

It may be time to stop using that box dye and see a pro to get a quality product on your hair. Bond builders are agents that are being added to colors and lighteners by professionals to help protect the hair during the coloring and lifting process, so next time you book your color appointment inquire on whether or not your stylist is using them and if not ask if they can. Swimming in chlorine or saltwater is also not the best for your hair. If a swim cap (which is a good idea btw) doesn’t fit your poolside style, then maybe try wetting your hair with tap water and adding conditioner throughout it, then styling it up in tight bun or braid to help protect it before cannonballing into the water. Lastly, using quality shampoo, conditioner, and masques are key to moisturized and strong hair. Some of our favorite brands that our hair stylists recommend at the salon are Kerastase, Redken, & Davines. All available at both of our LOOK Style Society locations in the Las Vegas area.

Menopause can be a tough time both physically and mentally so make sure that you are in open communication with your doctor about medications and prescriptions. Oftentimes they can be changed up to help prevent hair loss and other side effects caused by the change. Sometimes the hair loss is inevitable and maybe it is wise to consider switching up your style to accommodate your hair in it’s current state. Seeing a professional hair stylist at a Look Style Society salon for a consultation could shed some light on some fabulous options to work with your new normal. If you can’t  stop it, take control of it and make it fabulous!
